Shaping change: The next decade will be crucial for the attainment of Agenda 2030 globally. Costa Cruises
towards Agenda has based its elaboration of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals on the
definition of a list of issues, assigning a level of priority to each one. The aim is to control the
2030 impacts generated by our business and use those impacts as drivers of change in accordance
with a concrete, transparent approach.
Our sustainability strategy, designed with a long-term vision, has enabled the Company to
initiate and pursue a process of gradual, internal transformation in key areas with a direct
impact on Costa’s ecosystem and main stakeholders.
The definition both of a clear setting in which to implement structured action plans (including
specific targets) and of a roadmap geared towards ensuring Costa’s tangible contribution
by managing the business according to the guiding principle of responsible innovation
has allowed the Company to create unique projects resonating beyond the cruise industry.
All the strategic choices are based on the conviction that it is necessary to adopt a two-
pronged approach involving mitigation of the negative impacts generated and – at the same
time – the pursuit of scalable solutions that will generate positive impacts.
It should also be mentioned that the sector in which the company operates entails a
sustainability reporting boundary that includes practically all 17 United Nations SDGs.
A ship is a self-contained system and, as such, lends itself to application of an integrated
approach to sustainable development issues. This dimension clearly demands a very complex
management system dealing with the material issues and the potential risks/opportunities
associated with them. Costa Cruises’ strong links with local communities all over the world
adds further complexity; indeed, although the universality of the SDGs is undisputed, the
Company pays special attention to the impacts and implications of its operations locally.
An integral part of this way of including the principles of sustainable development in the
operational dimension and promoting their gradual application is by researching and
exploring possible business scenarios. Working out how these can be applied to product
development and the design of new services is a great opportunity for the Company: the
potential implications are extremely interesting and, given the nature of the business, the
field of application is enormous.
