 With regard to attainment of the SDGs, investments in infrastructure – especially in transport,
 energy and IT – are a vital way of enabling local communities to pursue a path to structured
 and balanced growth. In this sense, Costa’s actions in its ports of call are a tangible example
 of  how  businesses  can  be  key  enablers  and  decisive  players  in  triggering  development
 processes with direct positive impacts at societal level. Accordingly, for some time now Costa
 has pursued the specific aim of using an approach oriented towards participatory dialogue
 and joint evaluation of the Company’s growth objectives and the positive effects on the local
 community  concerned.  Creating  connections  between  people,  especially  between  guests
 and communities, is extremely beneficial and, if they are properly capitalized on, they can
 transform local economies and create new skills in and around the ports of call. Also in this
 respect Costa frequently acts as a driver of local development.
 A study of 12 ports was conducted to measure the direct, indirect and induced economic
 impacts generated by Costa, these reflecting the local effects of a corporate strategy pursued
 globally . In overall terms the impact generated varies according to the size of the port in

 question, the number of itineraries and whether or not the Company has contracts with local
 shipyards.
 The creation of long-term partnerships is the foundation of the activities developed in ports;
 in some cases depending on the nature of the relationship and the level of interaction,
 Memorandums of Agreement are drawn up and plans are drafted in order to involve key
 stakeholders in the decision-making process.
