In addition to incorporating sustainability aspects in its procurement criteria, Costa also has
a strong policy supporting Italian-made products, achieving a short supply chain where
possible, and promoting the highest quality local goods and produce, especially when it comes
to food. The Company has around 200 local suppliers throughout Italy, guaranteeing supplies
of superior quality food&wine products, while promoting Italian excellence among Costa’s
guests. By way of example, Costa satisfies its overall shipboard requirements for ewe’s milk
cheese (approximately 10,000 kg a year) by purchasing D.O.P. Pecorino Romano produced
by five Sardinian cooperatives belonging to the Alleanza Cooperative Agroalimentari,
thereby supporting a valuable part of Italy’s agri-food sector; this support also includes the
dissemination on board of promotional and informative materials provided by the Pecorino
                                                 Romano D.O.P. Consortium.
The same criterion underpins the synergy between Costa Cruises and Le Cesarine, a
gastronomic cultural association set up in Bologna in 2004, whose aim is to preserve and
convey the inimitable Italian culinary tradition. Thanks to this collaboration, Costa’s guests in
transit in Civitavecchia have the possibility of participating in a “local food experience”, thus
fostering the national culinary heritage and supporting communities where the food&wine
sector plays a vital role in the local economy. Our intention is to extend this type of initiative
to other ports, taking advantage of Le Cesarine’s extensive network so as to boost as far as
possible our support for Italy’s agri-food industrial heartland.
